What Is the Difference Between LASIK, PRK, and Other Laser Procedures?

Image
Refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can cause blurred vision and dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Laser vision correction procedures are designed to reshape the cornea so that light focuses more accurately on the retina. LASIK, PRK, and other laser-based procedures use different techniques and may be suitable for different patients. What Is LASIK? LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, involves creating a thin corneal flap and using a laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. The flap is then repositioned. LASIK generally involves relatively quick visual recovery, although recovery varies from person to person. What Is PRK? PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, also reshapes the cornea with a laser but does not create a corneal flap. Instead, the thin outer layer of the cornea is removed before laser treatment and naturally regenerates during healing. Visual recovery can take longer than with LASIK, and patients may ex...
